Doubles disappoint – fuss over Olympic nomination

The newcomers Ivan Nagler/Fabian Malleier came in 10th place in Oberhof, while Ludwig Rieder/Patrick Rastner didn't get higher than 14th place.

The Germans celebrated a double victory with Eggert/Benecken ahead of Wendl/Arlt. The Austrian duo Penz/Fischler prevented the German triple victory and pushed Geueke/Gamm into fourth place.

The fact that the South Tyrolean veterans Christian Oberstolz/Patrick Gruber were not at the start in Oberhof fueled speculation. And they have now been confirmed in an interview with “Gazzetta dello Sport”: The two 40-year-olds are not among the two couples nominated for the Olympics and will no longer be called up for the remaining World Cup races.

“We found out after the races in Königssee that we were no longer part of the squad,” says a very disappointed Christian Oberstolz in the “Gazzetta” interview. “Rieder/Rastner and Nagler/Malleier were preferred to us. Our proposal to be allowed to race at least the last three World Cup races in Oberhof, Lillehammer and Sigulda was also rejected.”
