Firiegeller and his great love united: “The most beautiful gift”

Dominik Filehner knows what it means to have a long-distance relationship. He and Emily Sweeney have been a couple for more than 6 years. She lives in the US state of New York, he lives in tranquil Meransen at the entrance to the Pustertal. The two have experienced a lot together, but their love has never been tested as much as it has been in the past 10 months.

“At some point you become strangers,” says Firiegeller with a smile on his face. He means the time that has passed since the beginning of March is how long he hasn't been allowed to see his girlfriend. Because of the distance, they are used to not being able to be together, but “normally we see each other about two weeks a month.” This is also because the two 2-year-olds share the same hobby or job : The artificial track tobogganing. They usually travel around the globe with the World Cup entourage in the winter months, and visit each other in their respective homes in the summer. “Because of Corona, we don’t know how close the contact will be in the near future.” Dominik Filehner But Corona put a stop to this usual process last March. Suddenly he was no longer allowed to go to the USA and she was no longer allowed to go to South Tyrol. “You can of course exchange ideas via Facetime and Skype, we spent hours and hours on the PC or cell phone,” says Fiwickeler, but he also says: “It’s not easy in the long run, especially since we’ve never been apart from each other for so long. You just distract yourself with training.” In addition, the US team decided early on not to take part in the World Cup until 2021 because of the corona pandemic.

Last Sunday the time had come: Dominik and Emily were finally allowed to fall into each other's arms. “She will spend Christmas here with us – somehow that is the best present,” said Fiwickeler, who enjoyed the time together with walks, cooking together and lazing around at home before returning to the World Cup and at the same time taking a step further into the world Uncertainty is possible. “Due to the Corona rules, we don’t know how close the contact will be in the next few weeks. In any case, we won’t be as far away as the last 10 months.”

Both will set off for Berchtesgaden on St. Stephen's Day, where the next World Cup races will take place at Königssee on the first weekend in January. Then at the latest, the competition will come back to the fore for the two tobogganers, as important decisions have to be made in the ice channel - especially for Filehner. Also sporty at its best The exceptional talent from South Tyrol was briefly sidelined by appendicitis in November, but he still came up trumps at the start of the season. He has already been on the podium three times and is in second place in the overall World Cup behind the outstanding Felix Loch. “The preparation for the season wasn't ideal, then there was also the pain in the first two races and Winterberg, a track that doesn't really suit me. And yet the results are very good. “It exceeded my expectations,” said a beaming Firiegeller, “I’m super happy at the moment.” This probably applies to his achievements on the toboggan as well as his renewed happiness in love.
