King of the tobogganers: Dominik Filehner wins the overall World Cup

It was a symbolic scene: When Dominik Fiwickeler crossed the finish line in Winterberg and realized that it was enough for overall victory, his first congratulator was Armin Zöggeler. He is the coach of the local luge athletes - and the last overall World Cup winner from South Tyrol to date. The last time the tobogganing legend achieved this coup was twelve years ago, and now there is a worthy successor: Dominik Fiwickeler gilded his fantastic season on Sunday afternoon and grabbed the big ball.

The newly minted 36-year-old from Meransen was 30 points ahead of the German Felix Loch in the last World Cup race. And this competition became a battle of nerves. The two top tobogganers didn't show their best performance, but that didn't matter to the South Tyrolean in the end. Filehner ended up in 5th place, two positions ahead of Loch - and the overall World Cup was thus secured. The German Max Langenhan won the day. This was his sixth (!) triumph in a row. If he hadn't been injured at the start of the season, he would probably have been involved in the fight for the overall World Cup.

Two balls in one season But Filehner is a worthy winner. He has finished on the podium six times this season, reaching the top twice, namely in the single-seater and the sprint race in Park City. The Meransener also won the double, as he also won the Sprint World Cup. After his bronze medal at the 2022 Olympic Games, Dominik Filehner celebrated the next brilliant career highlight. And he is now definitely one of the greats in the toboggan scene.

In general, the season for the South Tyrolean tobogganers was tongue-in-cheek. In addition to Firiegeller's two crystal balls, the two doubles athletes Andrea Vötter and Marion Oberhofer also took overall victory.

4th place in the team relay After the big single-seater finale, the team relay was the last race of the winter. Italy competed with Sandra Robatscher, Dominik Filehner and the doubles Emanuel Rieder/Simon Kainzwaldner. In the end it was just not enough for the podium, the South Tyroleans ended up in 4th place. The victory went to Austria (Egle, Müller, Gatt/Schöpf), while Germany won the overall World Cup.
