“Simply amazing”: Hole record luge world champion with sixth World Cup triumph

Winterberg (SID) Germany's model luger Felix Loch (Berchtesgaden/29) became the record world champion at the home World Cup and impressively ended his dry spell. After a year without a win, the two-time individual Olympic champion won the men's race in Winterberg on Sunday and celebrated his sixth title. Together with Italy's icon Armin Zöggeler (45), Loch now leads the leaderboard. After two runs, Loch prevailed with a lead of 0,1 seconds over the Austrian Reinhard Egger. European champion Semen Pavlitschenko from Russia (0,113 seconds back) came third. "It was crazy, I knew that I had to give it my all. To win now after this season is simply amazing," said Loch on ZDF: "We have changed a lot on the sled, the whole team just fits together. That's what makes us successful "It's a great day." The Olympic bronze medalist Johannes Ludwig (Oberhof) took fourth place ahead of the strong World Cup debutant Chris Eißler (Zwickau/5th). Sebastian Bley (Suhl) landed in 20th place. Olympic champion Natalie Geisenberger (Miesbach) had already won World Cup gold on Saturday. The 30-year-old confidently led a German double victory, whiz kid Julia Taubitz (Oberwiesenthal) took silver, more than four tenths of a second behind. In the doubles, Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken (Ilsenburg/Suhl) were ahead. The Thuringians successfully defended their title ahead of the Olympic champions Tobias Wendl/Tobias Arlt (Berchtesgaden/Königssee). Loch had lost his title to Wolfgang Kindl (Austria) at the 2017 World Championships in Igls, but at the Winter Games in February 2018 in Pyeongchang he lost the almost certain gold due to a mistake in the last run. Loch had his last victory until Sunday on January 14, 2018 at the World Cup in Oberhof.
