Rieder/Rastner brilliant second place at the World Cup opener

Only Eggert/Benecken ahead of Rieder/Rastner The big highlight from a South Tyrolean perspective was in the doubles, where the duo Ludwig Rieder/Patrick Rastner from Meransen and Lüsen only had to bow to the German world champion duo Toni Eggert/Sascha Benecken.

After the brilliant second place in the first run, the two Eisacktalers were able to confirm their result with another second-best running time in the second run and keep the other German duo Tobias Wendl/Tobias Arlt at a distance.

Rieder/Rastner equaled their best World Cup result to date: They also came second once at Königssee. And in Sigulda they were already on the podium once, albeit in third place.

The two veterans Christian Oberstolz and Patrick Gruber were also happy with their start to the season: the 39- and 40-year-olds were able to work their way up from ninth place to sixth place in the second round.

However, the race was forgettable for the young sledders Florian Gruber and Simon Kainzwaldner: they were disqualified in the first run.

Vötter in the top 10 for the first time 22-year-old Andrea Vötter, who won the Nations Cup race on Friday, also demonstrated her skills in the World Cup and finished in sixth place. With her very first top 10 placement in the World Cup (so far eleventh place in Calgary 2014 was her best result), Vötter has already taken a big step towards Olympic qualification.

But the two 16-year-olds Nina Zöggeler and Verena Hofer also proved their talent in their first World Cup starts and came in 15th and 17th. Zöggeler and Hofer were the youngest sledders in the entire starting field and (like Vötter and Sandra Robatscher) qualified through the Nations Cup.

Among other things, the two boys also left Robatscher behind, who had to settle for 20th place and will probably have to improve in the next races in order not to miss the train or flight to the Olympics in South Korea.

In the competition for victory in Igls, as so often in recent years, the German lugers were among themselves: Victory ultimately went to Natalie Geisenberger ahead of Dajana Eiltberger and Tatjana Hüfner.
