Tobogganers back in Europe

The world's first artificial ice rink is celebrating its 50th birthday this World Cup weekend. The project cost around 50 million euros 3,5 years ago - and was unique at the time and later a model for numerous other artificial ice rinks around the world. The races at Königssee are traditionally held around Epiphany (January 6th), a public holiday in Bavaria, and therefore guarantee an impressive crowd.

The 35th World Cup weekend at Königssee begins on Saturday morning (10.10:XNUMX a.m.) with the doubles. From a South Tyrolean perspective, Ludwig Rieder from Meransen and Patrick Rastner from Lüsen are hoping for a top ten placement. After the two South Tyroleans finished fifth and ninth respectively in Igls and Whistler at the start of the season, they were not able to finish in the top ten in the last two races. The young double-seater duo Ivan Nagler and Fabian Malleier will also be there again at Königssee after a break from the overseas races.

On Saturday at 12.50 p.m. the women will go to the ice track. Andrea Vötter from Fiè allo Sciliar is having her best World Cup season so far. This year she came fifth in Igls and fourth in Calgary. Most recently in Lake Placid, however, Sandra Robatscher from Tiers was the best “Azzurra” with tenth place.

The men's individual competition will then take place on Epiphany. Dominik Filehner is South Tyrol's hottest prospect for a top placement. With second place at the first World Cup in Igls, he was already on the podium this year. At the last race around three weeks ago in Calgary, the man from Merans was in a promising position in fourth place after the first round. After a weaker second run, the 25-year-old had to settle for ninth place in the end.

At the end of the World Cup on the six-time World Cup track, a team relay will take place on Sunday at 13.30 p.m. In the two team relays so far this season, the South Tyroleans have not yet been on the podium. In Whistler, however, Andrea Vötter, Dominik Filehner and the doubles Ludwig Rieder/Patrick Rastner missed the podium by just 0,140 seconds and took fourth place.
