World Cup surprise: Rieder/Kainzwaldner race to silver

It was only at the end of January that the Meransen and Villandro residents celebrated their first podium finish of their careers with second place at the World Cup Sprint in Sigulda (Latvia). Now the next milestone followed at the World Championships in Sochi: Rieder/Kainzwaldner also raced to the silver medal in the sprint. The two South Tyroleans were only beaten by the Russians Aleksandr Denisev and Vladislav Antonov, who were 0,045 seconds faster than the local lugers. Bronze went to the German duo Tobias Wendl/Tobias Arlt, who were 81 thousandths of a second behind. Biggest success of his career Rieder/Kainzwaldner have celebrated the greatest success of their careers to date. And that even though the winter didn't start ideally: in Sochi of all places - where the duo raced to silver on Friday thanks to a flawless drive - Rieder injured his foot during training before the season and had to undergo surgery. A few months later, the two can call themselves vice world champions. Ludwig Rieder and Patrick Rastner ended up in 11th place, while Ivan Nagler and Fabian Malleier took 15th place.
