South Tyrol's skating aces are hunting for medals in Sigulda

21 nations have registered for the 45th World Championships of the International Luge Federation (FIL) in Sigulda, Latvia on 14/15. Submitted February 2015. 106 sleds are mentioned, of which 42 are men's, 40 are women's and 24 are doubles. According to the registration results, twelve team relays can take part in the decision at the end of the title fights.

The defending champions are also considered top favorites. Especially since the current world champions Natalie Geisenberger, Felix Loch and the double Tobias Wendl/Tobias Arlt (all GER) also became Olympic champions in 2014 and won the gold medal together at the Olympic premiere of the team relay.

Ten South Tyroleans at the start

But the South Tyroleans also want to have a say in the medal awarding in Sigulda, Latvia, especially Dominik Fischnelller and the double Christian Oberstolz/Patrick Gruber. Filehner got back on the road to success just in time for the World Cup. At the World Cup in Lillehammer almost two weeks ago, he returned to the podium in third place and thus gained self-confidence for the upcoming major event. “The World Cup can come. I'm ready and want to do well, also because the ice track there is one of my favorite tracks. “Last year I came third in Sigulda, let’s see what happens for me this year,” explained Filehner after the race in Lillehammer.

Oberstolz/Gruber, on the other hand, narrowly missed out on a place on the podium in Winterberg and Lillehammer. In Sigulda, the two veterans from the Puster Valley should finally achieve their first podium finish of the current season, especially since the Latvian ice channel is one of their favorite tracks. They were crowned European champions there just a year ago and also celebrated two World Cup victories and six second places.

In addition to Dominik Filehner and Oberstolz/Gruber, seven other South Tyroleans are at the start in Sigulda. Namely Kevin Fischler, Andrea Vötter, Sandra Robatscher, Ludwig Rieder/Patrick Rastner and Florian Gruber/Simon Kainzwaldner. However, Emanuel Rieder and David Mair are not in the squad.

Fourth edition of the “U23” World Championships For the fourth time, the 45th World Championships of the International Luge Federation (FIL) in Sigulda, Latvia, will take place on 14/15. In February 2015, medals were awarded again in the title competitions for athletes under 23 years of age. The medals will be awarded in the “Race-in-Race” mode within the respective World Cup decisions for women, men and doubles. Two years ago, Dominik Filehner secured gold, Ludwig Rieder and Patrick Rastner won silver in the doubles.
