The overall World Cup winners for natural track tobogganers have been determined

In the men's competition it was a close affair until the end, with the Austrian Thomas Kammerlander and the two South Tyroleans Alex Gruber and Patrick Pigneter, three athletes fighting for victory in the overall World Cup. In the end, however, it was the local hero who was able to secure the title with a triumph on his home track. “Each of us three would have deserved the overall victory. Today, however, I was the lucky one,” explained Kammerlander after the race, which took place under difficult external conditions – rain and warm temperatures made it difficult for the tobogganers. “Anything could have happened, so we were pretty nervous before the start. “I’m all the happier about the victory, especially in front of so many spectators,” said the defending champion, who also won gold at the European Championships this year. “This was a great season for me. The only negative thing about it is that it can only get worse from now on,” said the Austrian with a smile.

Second place in the overall ranking went to Gruber, who came third in Umhausen behind Kammerlander and Pigneter. “The other two simply rode better today, and Kammerlander is difficult to beat here anyway. That's why third place is okay for me," said Gruber, who was satisfied with his performance in the overall World Cup: "I had a consistent season and was always able to be at the top, so I'm very happy with second place." Gruber's teammate Despite a good performance in Umhausen, Pigneter ultimately had to settle for third place in the overall ranking. “I just missed the looseness this season. But I hope that it will come back next year at the latest,” said the Völser.

Lanthaler and the special double pack For the women, the decision in the overall World Cup was made the day before in favor of Evelin Lanthaler, who was able to win her second title of the season just a short time after winning the gold medal at the European Championships. She benefited from the failure of her teammate Greta Pinggera, who was unable to finish the first race in Umhausen due to a fall and was therefore no longer a threat to Lanthaler - Pinggera was the only athlete who would still have been able to catch up with Lanthaler. However, the latter was able to tackle its final run without any pressure. “I wanted to show another good performance today. The second run was extremely difficult because the track was very soft. But I made the best of it and maintained my lead," said Lanthaler, who was not only happy about her first victory in Umhausen, but of course especially about the triumph in the overall World Cup: "It was my big goal to win the title, And I'm glad that it worked." Despite the failure in Umhausen, her teammate Pinggera remained in second place in the overall World Cup. Third place went to the Austrian Tina Unterberger, who also finished third on the Grantau track behind the German Sara Bachmann . “It was bad for me to ride here, I don’t like all the mud at all,” explained the Austrian after the race. “But overall the season was sensational for me, more was simply not possible.”

In the doubles, Patrick Pigneter/Florian Clara were able to take back the overall World Cup title: The South Tyroleans, who were in second place in the first round, fought their way to the top in the final race and won their fifth race of the season in Umhausen. “The conditions on the track today were completely different than yesterday, but we adapted well to it,” explained Pigneter, who was happy about winning the title. “We are very happy with the victory in the overall World Cup – that was our big goal this season and we achieved it.” His partner Clara added: “It's a great feeling to be at the top again. We worked hard over the summer and everything went well for us from the start, everything worked out. Now we are of course completely satisfied.”

Second place in the overall ranking went to the Russians Pavel Porshnev/Ivan Lazarev, while two Russians, Aleksandr Egorov/Petr Popov, also came third.

South Tyrol prevailed in the team competition: Florian Breitenberger, Evelin Lanthaler and Patrick Pigneter/Florian Clara took first place, Austria with Thomas Kammerlander, Tina Unterberger and Rupert Brüggler/Tobias Angerer followed in second place. The Russian team with Gregori Bukin, Daria Maleeva and Pavel Porshnev/Ivan Lazarev came third.

On Saturday the finals of the sixth GRM Group Luge World Cup on natural track took place on the Grantau track in Umhausen. Following the races, the overall winners for the 2017/2018 season were chosen.
