European Championships instead of the Olympics: Natural track sledders fight for medals

Things are happening in quick succession for the local natural railway aces. Before we go to the World Cup finals in Umhausen in the Ötztal in around 10 days, the European Championships are on the program in Winterleiten, Austria.

The European Championships take place from Friday, February 9th to Sunday, February 11th in Obdach-Winterleiten. And when there are big title fights in natural track tobogganing, it is always with South Tyrolean favorites. Among the men, Alex Gruber from Villanders and Patrick Pigneter from Völs are particularly worth mentioning, who are fighting a tough battle with North Tyrolean Thomas Kammerlander in the World Cup. Kammerlander is going into the race as defending champion; he won gold in the Passeier Valley two years ago. Also available is the Austrian Michael Scheikl, who will of course be particularly motivated at his home European Championship.

For the women, all eyes are on Greta Pinggera from Lasa and Evelin Lanthaler from Passier, who is starting as defending champion. In addition to the Austrians Tina Unterberger and Michelle Diepold, who can rely on their home advantage, the extended circle of favorites also includes the Russian Jekaterina Lavrentjewa, who made her comeback this season and declared a medal at the European Championships as her big goal.

In the doubles, victory should only come over defending champions Florian Clara and Patrick Pigneter. The two dominated at will this season and won all the races except the last one in Deutschnofen. They were too confident of victory on the Pföslriep track. Due to a mistake caused by a lack of concentration, Pigneter/Clara missed out on the early overall World Cup victory.
