Evelin Lanthaler: European champion in 11 seconds

There were extremely close decisions on the shortened “Spatzenhügel” track. Defending champion Evelin Lanthaler (11,38 seconds) won with just 0,03 seconds ahead of local hero Ekaterina Lavrenteva and 0,04 seconds ahead of Tina Unterberger (Austria). Greta Pinggera (+0,24 seconds) from Laas ended up in 4th place. For Lanthaler it is the 3rd European Championship title in a row after Passeier 2016 and Winterleiten (Austria) 2018.

“Considering the spring-like temperatures, the ice on the track wasn’t bad at all. Of course I would have liked to have driven from the top, but that was all I could do. “Today, a fine, sensitive driving style was the key to success,” analyzed Lanthaler.

“I feel sorry for the organizers, they worked hard and organized a really nice European Championship. But we are powerless against the weather. If you wanted to win a medal today, you couldn't afford to make any mistakes," said five-time European champion Lavrenteva after her journey to the silver medal. Scheikl prevails among the men In the men's single-seater, Michael Scheikl (Austria) was crowned European champion for the first time with a time of 11,11 seconds. Local hero Aleksandr Egorov (+0,02) took the silver medal, bronze went to world champion Alex Gruber (Villanders/+0,03). “I would like to take this medal with me. It's a shame that it's a really cool event, but you also have to win a short race. The conditions were fair and anyone who trained well in the summer was able to start quickly and set a good time,” emphasized European champion Scheikl.

“It was very close. “Luck was on my side, my toboggan was 0,01 seconds faster than the toboggan of the two fourth-place finishers,” said bronze medalist Gruber.

The only double-seater race is scheduled for Saturday at 9 a.m., followed by the team competition. The defending champions are the South Tyroleans Patrick Pigneter/Florian Clara and the Austrian team.
