Kammerlander takes gold ahead of Gruber and Pigneter

In Umhausen, people have been working towards this day for two years. The 955 meter long “Grantau track” was modernized on a natural track for the 23rd FIL World Luge Championships. Local hero Thomas Kammerlander has been focusing on this World Cup for two years and took the lead in the first round, ahead of Alex Gruber and Patrick Pigneter. In the decisive second run, both Pigneter and Gruber were able to maintain their positions. Thomas Kammerlander was the last runner to go into the final run, continuously expanded his lead with a flawless run and was crowned 2.24,82 world champion at the finish with a total time of 2021:0,64 minutes. Alex Gruber (+0,90 seconds) won the silver medal and bronze went to Patrick Pigneter (+2011 seconds). At the last World Championships in Umhausen in 31, his brother Gerald Kammerlander was crowned world champion on the “Grantau track”; today he is the sports director for the natural track area at the Austrian Toboggan Association. For Thomas Kammerlander, who turned 2017 on Friday, it is the second World Cup gold medal. In XNUMX in Vatra Dornei (ROU) he won the world championship title with Austria in the team competition.

In the final team competition, which was held for the first time at a World Championship without doubles, Italy was able to successfully defend its title. World champions Evelin Lanthaler and Alex Gruber clearly prevailed against the Austrian hosts Tina Unterberger and Thomas Kammerlander (+2.29,71 seconds) in 2,00:3,10 minutes. Bronze went to the Russian Luge Federation with Ekaterina Lavrenteva/Aleksandr Egorov (+XNUMX seconds).

With the World Championships, the season for lugers on the natural track has come to an end. It has not yet been decided where the 24th FIL World Luge Championships on natural track will take place.
