No bluffs: World Cup favorites impress in training

The tobogganers from 20 different nations each completed two training runs on Friday. In the men's single-seater, the “2” flashed for local hero Thomas Kammerlander after both rounds. While he initially covered the 1 meter long track with a 955 meter difference in altitude in 120:1.13,33 minutes, “Kammi” was more than half a second faster in the second training run and was the only athlete to stay under the 1.12,75:1.13 minute mark in XNUMX:XNUMX.

In the first training run, the Villandro defending champion Alex Gruber came in second (+0,14), followed by the newly crowned overall World Cup winner Michael Scheikl (Austria/+0,55). Patrick Pigneter from Völs, record winner in Umhausen with 7 successes, took second place behind Kammerlander in the second training run (+0,50), Gruber came third here.

Lanthaler with best training time

For the women, Evelin Lanthaler from Passiria set the best training time. The World Cup dominator this winter (six wins in six races) crossed the finish line in the second training session after 1.14,29:0,91 minutes, making her 1.15.07 seconds faster than the Russian Ekaterina Lavrenteva. The third fastest time was achieved by Greta Pinggera from Lasa, also a tobogganer from Azzurre. In the first training session, Pinggera set the best running time of 0,02:1.15,34:XNUMX minutes and was XNUMX seconds ahead of Lanthaler. At the start of training, Austrian Tina Unterberger achieved the third fastest time (XNUMX:XNUMX).

In the early afternoon the doubles also went on the Grantau railway. The twelve-time overall World Cup winners Patrick Pigneter (Völs)/Florian Clara (Campill) achieved the best time in both training sessions. The defending champions were fastest in the first training session in 1.17,50:XNUMX. Based on their training performances, the other medal contenders are likely to include their South Tyrolean teammates Patrick Lambacher/Matthias Lambacher, the Austrian doubles Christoph Regensburger/Dominik Holzknecht and Fabian Achenrainer/Simon Achenrainer, as well as the Russians Stanislav Kovshik/Ilia Tarasov and Pavel Porshnev/Ivan Lazarev.

The first two medal decisions take place on Saturday. The competition day begins at 11.30 a.m. with the first round in the women's singles, followed by the doubles (12.30). From 13.45 p.m. the dice will be cast in the women's final race, and the new doubles world champions will be determined at 14.45 p.m. Spectators on site are not permitted due to the current safety regulations in the wake of the corona pandemic. Nevertheless, all fans of luge sport on natural track have the opportunity to be there first-hand at the highlight of the season.
