Evelin Lanthaler celebrates the start of the season

Evelin Lanthaler confirmed her role as favorite right from the start, the fastest in training on Friday set a clear best time in the first round on Saturday with 1:1 minutes, ahead of local hero Tina Unterberger and Greta Pinggera from Laas. In the second run, Pinggera took the lead with a great run on the 13.94 meter long track; the South Tyrolean was able to fend off Unterberger's attack. This awakened Lanthaler's fighting spirit, last year's series winner set another best running time of 2:1.033 minutes and ultimately won the season opener with a lead of 1 seconds over Pinggera. Unterberger ended up in third place, 13.80 seconds behind the winner.

“It was my big goal to start the new season with a win. I was already fast in training and had a good feeling right from the start. I am very satisfied,” explained Lanthaler after the award ceremony.

Hundredth thriller in a double seater The double-seater race was not for the faint of heart. With a brilliant finish in the first run, the defending champions from South Tyrol, Patrick Pigneter/Florian Clara, beat the Russians Pavel Porshnev/Ivan Lazarev by 1 seconds. In the decisive second round, the veterans from Russia managed a sparkling clean run, especially in the middle section, with a total time of 0,04:2 minutes, they pushed the young South Tyroleans Patrick Lambacher/Matthias Lambacher off the top. The half-time leaders Pigneter/Clara had already lost their mini-lead in the upper part of the route; despite a strong drive in the last section, the reigning world champions did not come close to the Russians' fabulous time by 2 seconds. For Proshnev/Lazarev, the new season begins as the old one ended: at the 35.13/0,11 season finale in Umhausen, the Russians also entered the winners' list. On Sunday, the two races in the men's single-seater are on the program at Winterleiten, followed by the team competition in the new format for the first time. Only 2 runners (woman-man) will start and not 3 runners (woman-man-man or woman-woman-man) as before.
