Patrick Pigneter is the tragic hero of Latzfons

The Völser is the best natural track tobogganer of all time: he has already won the overall World Cup eleven times and celebrated a good 100 victories. But at the World Championships in Latzfons, of all places, his material let him down.

Pigneter achieved the second best time in the first round on Saturday and had every chance of being in the medal fight on Sunday. But shortly after the start of the second round, part of his toboggan broke, so the 31-year-old had to give up.

“I can’t explain the material breakage. I've made 2000 trips with this part and it's incomprehensible that it happened at the World Cup. It didn’t break in training, but in the most important race of the season,” said Pigneter.

A little later, the Völser still had reason to be happy: In the team competition, he won gold together with Evelin Lanthaler and Alex Gruber. Lanthaler and Gruber had already been crowned individual world champions.
