Russian opening victory in Deutschnofen

Pavel Porshnev/Ivan Lazarev prevailed in the double competition: The Russians won the race on Regglberg ahead of the World Cup-leading local heroes Patrick Pigneter/Florian Clara and the Austrians Christian Schopf/Andreas Schopf.

“We drove really well today, our first run was flawless, so we didn’t have to risk too much in the second,” said Lazarev after the race. "We tried to stay calm and drive calmly, the lead was enough." Only five points separate the Russians in the overall standings from the leaders Pigneter/Clara - that's what the two pairings are up against at the World Cup final in Umhausen everything. “Whoever is ahead in Umhausen wins,” says Clara in a nutshell. His assessment of the race in South Tyrol: “We simply made too many mistakes in the first run. In the final run we attacked fully and were able to make up some time, but in the end it wasn't enough. Nevertheless, we have to be satisfied with second place today.” Clara's partner Pigneter also shared this opinion, who was already focusing on the World Championships in Vatra Dornei next week: “That is the big goal for us this season.”

Gruber and Pinggera in the lead in qualifying

In the men's qualification, Alex Gruber, the winner of the last World Cup race in Nova Ponente, came first. With a time of 0:53.40 minutes, he was 40 hundredths faster than the current World Cup leader Thomas Kammerlander from Austria. Gruber's teammate Patrick Pigneter is in third place, 68 hundredths of a second behind Gruber.

A South Tyrolean also won the qualification for the women: Greta Pinggera, who won the race in Slovenia the previous week, clocked a time of 0:54.93 minutes in the home race. Second place was shared by the Austrian Tina Unterberger and Evelin Lanthaler from the Passeier Valley, the leader in the overall World Cup.

South Tyrolean victory in the Nations Cup

In the men's Nations Cup, Stefan Federer from South Tyrol came first, followed by two Russians Jakov Bukin and Aleksey Martyanov in second and third place, who were only five hundredths apart. There was also a close decision in the women's Nations Cup: Alexandra Pfattner from Eisacktal was only eight hundredths of a second faster than local hero Daniela Mittermair, who came second ahead of the Russian Lubov Starikova.

The final races for women and men as well as the team competition take place on Sunday.
