15 months conditional imprisonment for ex-ÖSV coach Walter Mayer

The former cross-country skiing coach Mayer had pleaded guilty in part and admitted, among other things, that he had obtained EPO and growth hormones for his own use. However, he had retracted a more extensive confession he had made to the police. The verdict was not legally binding for the time being. Although Mayer filed a waiver of legal action, the public prosecutor made no statement. Mayer also has to pay a fine of 240 daily rates of four euros each, i.e. a total of 960 euros. Arrested in October Mayer was briefly arrested last October over the matter. According to the indictment, the long-time cross-country skiing head coach of the ÖSV is said to have supplied various athletes with banned substances such as Epo, growth hormones and anabolic substances “between summer 2012 and April 2019.” The investigation revealed that cross-country skiers Johannes Dürr and Harald Wurm, former junior world champions, as well as a marathon runner and a triathlete were involved. Key witness Dürr was sentenced to a 15-month suspended prison sentence at the end of January after a partial confession. Operation Aderlass exposed network During Operation Aderlass, the doping network of Erfurt doctor Mark S. was exposed. A total of 23 athletes from eight European countries are said to have been involved in doping practices as S.'s customers.
