28 years later: Slalom gold for Italy's juniors

The youngster Giovanni Franzoni, coached by Peter Fill, had the World Championships in Bansko with a gold medal in the Super-G , Sophie Mathiou now ensured the perfect end with her gold medal in the women's slalom. The 19-year-old from the Aosta Valley is following in the footsteps of a South Tyrolean: The last Azzurra to win the junior slalom world championship title was Morena Gallizio from Avelengo. The Burggravine achieved this feat in the distant year 1993. Mathiou was still in fifth place in Bansko after the first round - also because fog suddenly appeared which made her journey considerably more difficult. In the second run, the Italian really came up trumps and left everyone behind her. Second place went to the Swede Moa Boström Mussener (+0,20 seconds) and the American AJ Hurt (+0,21). Curious: Sophie Mathiou was born in 2002 and is therefore one or two years younger than her two competitors on the podium. Elena Sandulli, who came from Brixen by choice, also put in a strong performance on Wednesday, finishing in eleventh place. Celina Haller, the only “real” South Tyrolean at the start, was eliminated in the first run. With this gold medal, Mathiou can now also take part in the World Cup finals in Lenzerheide.
