Thomas Dreßen: “It went to shit”

“My goal is to come back and I will come back. But how quickly it happens, how long it takes, I have no idea. I won't go back on skis until everything is 100 percent right again," said the 25-year-old Mittenwalder on Sunday morning at Munich Airport after his return from the USA.

The time factor doesn't really matter at all, added the best German downhill skier. The doctors in the USA spoke of six to eight months, "but honestly, if it takes twelve or 18 months, it doesn't matter, but I'll accept it."

In Beaver Creek, Colorado, the Kitzbühel winner fell on Friday during the second World Cup downhill of the season and was seriously injured. According to an initial diagnosis, the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments in the right knee are damaged, as well as the medial ligament and the meniscus. Dreßen dislocated his left shoulder, but then straightened it himself. “The advantage, in quotes, was that at that moment the pain in the knee was much greater,” he said.

On Sunday Dreßen went to further examinations with specialist Manuel Köhne in order to then discuss the further course of treatment. “I also want to have it operated on by him because he has already treated my knees. For me it is important that someone in whom I have complete trust does this,” said Dreßen.

Dreßen attributed the accident to unfortunate circumstances; in his opinion it was not a lapse in concentration. “The conditions were changing, we knew that. When we visited there was actually nothing there, but at 120 km/h the snow behaves differently,” he said. The severity of the knee injury was immediately clear to him. “It went to shit, there’s nothing we can do about it.”
