Alex Vinatzer has big plans

On Sunday night (start of the 1st run at 3.15 a.m./start of the 2nd run at 6.45 a.m. CET), Vinatzer, together with Luca De Aliprandini and Tommaso Sala, formed the “Azzurri” team of just 3 athletes. For him it is his first Olympic appearance within 7 days. His hopefully big appearance in the slalom will come on Wednesday, February 16th, and he will finish on the penultimate day of the Olympics on Saturday, February 19th in the team event. There he sensationally won bronze at the World Ski Championships in Åre three years ago. However, two cornerstones from that team, Irene Curtoni (resigned) and the then team leader Simon Maurberger (he was not nominated for the Olympics), were not there. For Vinatzer, who has been in the ski resort of Yanqing for six days, the three races in one week are no problem: “I mainly take the giant slalom with me to familiarize myself with the snow. If there are some good FIS points in there, all the better.” Vinatzer competed in the World Cup giant slalom races in Sölden and Adelboden this year, but with start numbers over 60 he had no chance of reaching the second run. At the Olympics, due to the quota system with only a maximum of 2 starters per nation, many participants will be eliminated, so he should have a number around 4. This increases the chances of being among the top 40 in the first round. He also believes that the race will be a maximum of 1 seconds short. “It's steep at the top, then the slope is relatively flat. We are racing on the same route where the women competed in the giant.” After the giant slalom, Vinatzer will take a day off and then prepare for the slalom. The 22-year-old is one of the large circle of medal contenders there. If he manages to finish 2 error-free runs on exactly day X, he will currently be one of the fastest in the world. But the emphasis is on “if”. Because there hasn't been a perfect Vinatzer slalom this season. Despite placing 4th (Madonna), 5th (Schladming) and 7th (Adelboden).

Alex Vinatzer has big plans

Alex Vinatzer's 2022 Olympic mission also starts on Sunday night. The man from Val Gardena has an intensive week ahead of him. First the giant slalom, then the slalom and last but not least the team event. The 22-year-old craves precious metal, especially in slalom.
