Vinatzer is currently training (mainly) in Schnalstal and is looking forward to the start of the World Cup on October 24th. The man from Val Gardena is in his prime as a ski racer. He has been 22 years old since September 22nd. If he stays healthy, Vinatzer still has many seasons ahead of him in the Ski World Cup. “But I really don’t know whether I’ll drive as long as Manni Mölgg,” he jokes. Mölgg will turn 3 on June 2022, 40. Vinatzer has already set an exclamation mark, he reached the podium twice in the Slalom World Cup. At the World Ski Championships in Cortina this year, the man from Val Gardena came fourth. But last season he was repeatedly eliminated between the narrow gates. Vinatzer looks back: “First the pandemic with all the requirements and then my appendectomy in autumn 2020. That set me back. There was a lack of training and therefore safety in the race. The result was five failures in a row.” Worked a lot mentally Failures can always occur in slalom. “Unless your name is Marcel Hirscher,” emphasizes Vinatzer, “but I worked a lot on it mentally and made small changes to the boots and skis.” The man from Val Gardena no longer feels like a pure slalom specialist. “I've been training a lot in giant slalom, it's going really well. “I will be qualifying for the races in Sölden, which start on October 24th,” says the tall and always in a good mood athlete. Most recently he trained a lot of slalom indoors in Belgium. At 22, it is clear to him that his best years still lie ahead of him: “I lack experience in many things. The first World Cup victory and consistently good placings are my goals.” His great childhood idol was Bode Miller, the “rubber man” from the USA. “I even dressed like him,” reveals Vinatzer. Goals: Good position in the World Cup – and the Olympics Maybe the 22-year-old will one day be an all-rounder: “I definitely want to place well in the overall World Cup.” The Winter Olympics are taking place in Beijing in February 2022. For Vinatzer it would be the first: “That is of course a big goal and a big incentive at the same time. There are special snow conditions there that you have to get used to. So it would be important to train early in Beijing.”
