Assinger takes over the troubled ÖSV women

The 49-year-old worked in various positions as a coach at ÖSV from 2008 to 2020, his last position to date was that of speed head coach. Assinger is the younger brother of the ex-racer and current ORF presenter Armin Assinger.

For the past three years, the Carinthian has worked as a junior ski coach at the Davos sports high school in Switzerland. “I therefore approach this task completely uninfluenced. It is definitely a big and very exciting challenge. The most important thing now is that calm returns and I can plan the new season together with the athletes and the coaching team,” said Assinger.

Drinker leaves ÖSV “Last season definitely didn’t go as planned and was anything but satisfactory. After numerous discussions and a precise analysis of the current situation, we came to the decision that we want to go into the next season with Roland Assinger as the new women's boss," said ÖSV Alpine boss Herbert Mandl, commenting on the decision. The ÖSV wished the previous women's boss Thomas Trinker all the best for his professional and private future.

Trinker was elevated to the position by Mandl just a year ago. The Styrian, who lives in Tyrol, experienced a technical crisis, which also included a blatant drop in performance from Katharina Liensberger, as well as a generally below-average World Cup season with only two individual victories (Cornelia Hütter and Nina Ortlieb each in the Super-G). At the World Ski Championships in Méribel, the women won one silver and two bronze medals. Ortlieb became runner-up in the downhill, Hütter took bronze in the Super-G and Ricarda Haaser in the combination.

Assinger now has to look for a new supervisory staff with Mandl. Because both Speed head coach Alexander Hödlmoser and his assistant Florian Scheiber are likely to leave the ÖSV. Changes are also becoming apparent in the area of technology support staff. “There will definitely be changes there. If the whole team is actually going through a downward spiral, then you have to act safely,” Mandl said a week ago at the World Cup final in Soldeu.
