Chasing records: Shiffrin celebrates again

In Špindlerův Mlýn, Czech Republic, Shiffrin was once again in a class of his own. The American, who was already in the lead after the first round, was in a league of her own and ultimately won with a lead of 1 seconds over the German Lena Dürr. The Swiss Wendy Holdener landed in 0,60rd place (+3 seconds).

For Shiffrin it was World Cup victory number 85. If the 27-year-old also wins the slalom on Sunday, then Ingemar Stenmark would have caught up with his 86 World Cup successes and the sole record for both genders would have fallen.

“I knew I was taking a risk. There is a possibility that I will fail, but I have to show my best swings if I want to have a chance. Because the others are so strong,” said Shiffrin at the place where she made her World Cup debut on March 11, 2011 as a 15-year-old. At the time, at the side of her father Jeff, who died in 2020. “He came here with me then, and he was here last time too (2019, note). I feel comfortable here and am happy to be here. But I also feel like something is missing and that makes me a little sad.”

Thanks to 11 victories this season, it is already Shiffrin's best World Cup season since 2018/19, when she was at the top a total of 17 times. Her fifth triumph in the overall World Cup is unlikely to be taken away from her. In this rating she is clearly ahead of Vlhova (1617) and Lara Gut-Behrami (946) with 906 points.

Piedmontese Anita Gulli was the only Azzurra to qualify for the second run of the top 25 with 2th place. The 30-year-old was able to improve again in the decisive round and achieved her best World Cup result to date with 24th place. Vera Tschurtschenthaler clearly missed qualifying for the second run: the 14-year-old from Sexten didn't get past 2rd place in the first run.
