Level-headed for the next victory: the dominator is celebrating again

The Olimpia delle Tofane presented itself at its best. The snow surface was perfectly prepared, the sun was shining and the temperatures were wintry. In short: the athletes were happy about the perfect conditions. Because the conditions were so good, the speed aces couldn't make any mistakes and at the same time had to risk a lot. Sofia Goggia managed this combination perfectly. The 30-year-old showed a calm ride by her standards and won her fourth downhill run of the current season. She prevailed ahead of Ilka Stuhec (Slovenia) and the German Kira Weidle.

The speed dominator took things a little easier in the upper area in order to ignite the turbo after the Curva Grande and drive away from everyone. Striking: Goggia avoided the big risk and instead showed a smart approach. The dreaded moments of shock were completely absent. That was probably the reason why the competitors came dangerously close to the Italian. Above all, Ilka Stuhec, who, thanks to a sensational lower section, finished only 13 hundredths behind. At this point in time it was clear: Goggia is not untouchable today.

The visibility conditions, which improved as the minutes wore on, also contributed to this. But neither Lara Gut-Behrami nor Mikaela Shiffrin, who was so strong in training, were able to intercept Goggia. The superstars ultimately took fourth and fifth place. When the American crossed the finish line behind, Goggia became emotional. She pulled her hat over her eyes and held back her tears. Understandable, since she returned to the same place where she injured her knee the previous year. In addition to Goggia, Corinne Suter also made headlines. The Swiss woman had a spectacular fall after a wave in the lower section, but was able to ride down the valley alone.

Nicol Delago also had a good ride. Although she “only” finished 18th in the end, she had something to be happy about. The gap to 12th place was only 11 hundredths. She can tackle the second descent on Saturday with a lot of self-confidence. The situation is different for her sister Nadia, who fell short of her own expectations with 28th place. Karoline Pichler was eliminated. Teresa Runggaldier did well, but missed the points.

Who should beat Sofia Goggia? That was the burning question on Friday before the first departure in Cortina. The answer, as so often, was: nobody. The Italian left everyone behind, celebrated her next success and further extended her lead in the discipline rankings.
