Bormio: Svindal celebrates 25th World Cup victory – Innerhofer in the top ten

Aksel Lund Svindal triumphed in the Bormio downhill on Sunday and climbed to the highest World Cup podium for the 25th time in his career. The Norwegian, who celebrated his 31st birthday three days ago, prevailed on the Stelvio slope in 1:54,08 minutes and relegated the Austrian Hannes Reichelt to second place with a lead of 0,39 seconds. To date, Svindal had never won in Bormio; his best result to date was third place last year. Val Gardena winner Erik Guay (+0,51) completed the podium.

Meanwhile, the best “Azzurro” was Christof Innerhofer in sixth place (+0,98). The Gaiser, who was the fastest in the first training session on Thursday, also achieved his best downhill result of the current season. Overall, it was the second best result of the season for the Pusterer, who came fourth in the Super-G in Lake Louise.

“I swapped my shoes for some harder ones this morning. I'm happy with my run and I have to say that under these conditions I couldn't have done more. I don't particularly like this type of snow. Nevertheless, I risked everything, especially in the upper part, but in the lower part I felt more comfortable and was able to make up a tenth or two. I did my best and would like to thank my fans who always support me so actively. I have a special relationship with the slopes here because I celebrated my first World Cup victory here five years ago. Sixth place today gives me a lot of self-confidence for the upcoming races,” Innerhofer is quoted as saying on the website of the Italian Winter Sports Association.

Peter Fill in 15th place

With Silvano Varettoni, another “Azzurro” made it into the top ten in Bormio. Peter Fill ended up in 1,53th place, 15 seconds behind, while Werner Heel and Siegmar Klotz had to be content with a place outside the top 30 and didn't get any World Cup points. Klotz, who was 2,36 seconds behind at the finish, came 33rd. Werner Heel took 44th place. Pusterer Jeffrey Frisch, who has been driving for Canada since 2005, came 41st.
