Brignone: “One of my most difficult races ever”

Four years ago the race in Sölden was similarly difficult, and it wasn't easy there either because of the fog and the many holes. Back then the run was also about 20 seconds longer than it is today - and yet I think I had even bigger problems today. In the starting house I was more tense than ever before,” said the Lombard woman after the race.

Immediately before the race, Brignone struggled with severe stomach problems. “The stomach cramps in the starting area came relatively suddenly, as I had been feeling very well in the last few days and also this morning,” commented the 28-year-old. “During my rides I found it very difficult to breathe and barely saw anything – I was just struggling and trying to ski. Luckily I memorized the course setting well, which was a big advantage.”

Brignone also spoke about her physical condition - she was recently slowed down for a few weeks by a training fall in Zermatt. “This year’s injury is difficult to compare with the pain I experienced last year. This year I fell and was able to completely heal the injury from the fall. Last year, however, I had constant pain that kept coming back,” analyzed the Italian.

Brignone quickly made up for her lack of training. “In the few days I was on skis, I felt good and took a small step forward every day. So I got to 100 percent relatively quickly. Last year, however, I always had to slow down a bit and was never really prepared, which was a real nightmare. It was a great success for me to start today – the fact that I came second is actually unbelievable,” concluded Brignone.
