Brignone's liberation in a cursed Super-G

It hasn't been Federica Brignone's winter so far, as she hasn't yet reached her form from last season - in which she won the overall World Cup. Now the Aostan woman made a big statement and won the Super-G in the Fassa Valley. It was their first win of the season and an exemplary reaction to their messed up home World Cup in Cortina.

Before the race, Brignone was not a top favorite to win. The hottest candidate came from Switzerland and is called Lara Gut-Behrami. The Swiss has been in a league of her own in Super-G so far, winning four out of five races and also the world championship title in this discipline. She also gained a lot of self-confidence with the two downhill victories on Friday and Saturday. But Brignone was in a class of its own on Sunday. Brignone in the footsteps of Compagnoni The winding route was ideal for the Italian and she was able to exploit all of her technical strengths here. Because Brignone also took risks and remained almost flawless, she set the fastest time with start number five. Lara Gut-Behrami, who came in seven, seemed a bit weaker compared to her two downhill victories this weekend and ultimately crossed the finish line six tenths of a second behind. This was enough for second place, which meant that the Swiss woman secured victory in the Super-G sphere. Corinne Suter, also a Swiss woman, came third.

Behind them are three Italians: Elena Curtoni, Francesca Marsaglia and Marta Bassino. As a result, there are four Azzurre in the first six places – a fantastic team performance. Teresa Runggaldier ended up in 40th place, while Nadia Delago was eliminated. For Brignone it was the 16th World Cup victory of her career, which is why she has drawn level with the most successful Italian ski racer Deborah Compagnoni. The helicopter has to approach twice The race in the Fassa Valley was overshadowed by two serious crashes. Shooting star Kajsa Vickhoff Lie was the first to get hit, as she took off at high speed. Because the skis didn't come off, the Norwegian's legs twisted – her screams of pain could be heard on TV and went through her heart and soul. Lie had to be transported away by helicopter and the race was interrupted for around half an hour. The extent of the injuries is not yet clear. According to initial reports, a fractured tibia and fibula are suspected.

A little later, the Austrian Rosina Schneeberger was also hit when she got stuck on a goal and had a bad fall. She probably suffered a knee injury. The helicopter also had to approach Schneeberger, which resulted in a longer interruption. To make matters worse, a piste worker apparently injured his shoulder. The Super-G in Val di Fassa was definitely not under a good star.
