The special relationship between South Tyroleans and Sölden - a review

Would you like an example? Three years ago, everything was in place for the perfect debut: Denise Karbon and Manuela Mölgg were unstoppable in the first round of the giant slalom and took a comfortable double lead. But at the end of the first World Cup race of the 2009/10 season, the dream of a double victory for the South Tyrolean ski women was dashed. Mölgg was eliminated, Karbon came third.

In the following season Manuela Mölgg was on the podium. The woman from Enneberg also ended up in third place.

Twelve months ago, however, there was once again nothing to gain for the local athletes: Denise Karbon and Lisa Agerer were eliminated in the first round. Manuela Mölgg was in eleventh place after the first run, but slipped in the second round after a few goals and was eliminated like her colleagues. In the men's category, Manfred Mölgg came in 17th and Alexander Ploner in 23rd place at least a few World Cup points.

Incidentally, Dennis Karbon was the only South Tyrolean to be included in the long list of winners in Sölden. She won the World Cup opener in 2007. However, a look at the Sölden men's record is frightening: with Manfred Mölgg and Arnold Rieder, only two South Tyroleans made it into the top ten in the 14 giant slaloms in the Ötztal World Cup venue so far. So it's high time that this balance was polished up this weekend...
