The eternal duel goes into the next round

Killington is Shiffrin country: four slaloms have been held in the state of Vermont since 2016. All of them were due to the exceptional American talent. That's why the 26-year-old was the athlete to beat on Sunday - even if Petra Vlhova had recently won two slaloms in a row in Levi. On the run set by Norwegian coach Tim Gfeller, the opponents fought a thrilling head-to-head race in the first round, which narrowly ended in favor of the Slovakian.

Vlhova opened the race in front of the frenetic fans. Although it wasn't spectacular, it was sparkling clean and, above all, flawless. As a result, all the opponents bit their teeth at the benchmark, and Shiffrin also couldn't catch the woman from Liptovsky. In the meantime, they were already half a second behind. Only in the steep final section did the local hero increase the risk and come within two tenths of a second.

There will definitely be a lot of excitement in the second run. Especially since Shiffrin will give everything to maintain her impeccable record on the one hand and to equal Ingemar Stenmark's record on the other. The Swede has 46 giant slalom victories to his name, while the woman from Colorado has 45 in slalom. Only Holdener keeps up Behind the two exceptions, only Wendy Holdener (Switzerland) managed to keep the gap under one second. The recently strong Lena Dürr from Germany and last year's winner of the small ball Katharina Liensberger still have a chance on the podium with a delay of 1,06 and 1,24 seconds respectively. Italy's slalom team, however, experienced the next fiasco. Federica Brignone is the best Azzurra in 26th place.

Petra Vlhova and Mikaela Shiffrin are fighting bitterly for slalom supremacy. On Sunday the Slovakian left her mark on the first run in Killington, but her rival is lurking.
