“That’s it Grandpa, stop it”: A touching farewell to skiing

“It's not a big surprise, but I will compete in my last World Cup race on Wednesday”: Johan Clarey wrote these words on social media on Saturday evening. The Frenchman, who turned 8 on January 42th, will leave the ski circus after the World Cup finals in Soldeu. It had been in the air for a while that it would be over for him after this season, but now “Yo” made his departure official.

“That’s it Grandpa, stop resisting,” was Clarey’s humorous farewell message. Background: Because of his age, he was often referred to as a skiing grandfather in the past. But Clarey didn't live up to this description, because even in his last season the 42-year-old didn't present himself like a grandpa: in the downhill runs in Val Gardena and Kitzbühel he finished second on the podium.

Just a downer in your career In his career, Clarey has a total of eleven podium finishes to his name, and he was also named runner-up Olympic champion in the downhill in 2022 and runner-up world champion in the Super-G in 2019. So the Frenchman had a great career, but there was one downer: he couldn't win a World Cup. “It was 20 years of the World Cup, 20 years in which there were great encounters, dramas, but above all huge joys that I will remember for the rest of my life. 20 years that I was able to spend with great skiers who I see more as companions than as opponents.”

Clarey then thanked numerous people and said: “Off to a new chapter.” The Frenchman will miss the Ski World Cup, as the many comments under the posting show. “Bravo Johan, you had an incredible career. You are an inspiration to many young people. “Thank you for the beautiful moments,” wrote Christof Innerhofer.
