Denise Karbon: “I won’t let myself get down”

There is no doubt that Denise Karbon is one of the most outstanding skiers in the world. In the 2012/13 season she was only able to partially meet the high expectations. At the season opener in Sölden, the woman from Castelrotto took seventh place. In the following four giant slalom races, the winner of six World Cup races only scored points in St. Moritz (13th).

In Aspen, where she was seventh after the first run, Karbon was eliminated in the second run. In Courchevel, the 32-year-old's skis collapsed in the first run. And on Wednesday the giant slalom specialist was 0,19 seconds short of making it to the decision. “In the upper part I got stuck on a gate, it spun me out and I almost stopped. It’s a shame that in the end it wasn’t enough for the second round despite the big deficit,” says Denise Karbon in an interview SportNews .

“You become insecure” It's a vicious circle at the moment, even though the team was able to train ideally in Argentina in the summer and was brimming with self-confidence. “For the aggressive snow here in Europe at the moment, we simply haven’t found the right setup for our material yet. If the results don't come, then you become insecure, don't drive relaxed and tense. It's a matter of the mind," explains Karbon, who is still in Aare and will return home with the entire team on Friday for the first time after almost a month away. “The calendar from last year would certainly have been better for me because then we would have had more opportunity to test.”

But Denise Karbon doesn't let the mixed start to the season get her down. “It's not the first time that I didn't get off to a good start in my career. We are behind it and are working hard to be able to strike again. In January there will be a bit of a break anyway and I can prepare for the World Cup in peace. “I wasn’t actually in shape before the World Cup in Garmisch, and then things went very well at the World Cup,” says Karbon confidently.

“Looking forward to being home” As far as qualifying for the World Cup is concerned, she met the standard and currently has the ticket in the bag. “If four others have better results than me, then I’ll be eliminated, that’s very clear. But I'm not thinking about that." At the moment, the two-time World Cup medalist is just happy that she doesn't have any problems with her back or knee.

Now Karbon is looking forward to his time at home. “We've been on the road since December 1st and haven't been home once during the entire Advent season. Now I still have to organize all the presents and get ready for Christmas in a short time. It's good to escape from everyday skiing and think about something other than skiing," explains Karbon. And maybe the ski world will look completely different again after the break in a week at the World Cup giant slalom at Semmering.
