The farewell is near: a great ski career is coming to an end

It was November 29, 2003 when a young French skier stepped onto the World Cup stage for the first time. His name: Johan Clarey. At the time, it was not foreseeable that the speed specialist would remain active in the ski circus for two decades. And yet that's exactly how it happened: Even at the age of 41, the 1,91 meter tall downhill skier is competing in the premier class. Now his glorious career is slowly but surely coming to an end: “After this season it’s definitely over,” Clarey told the Krone newspaper.

The Frenchman will then be 42 years old – and will be able to look back on a career that is quite something. In his career, the likeable skier from Annecy has completed 228 World Cup races, reaching the podium nine times. His favorite race: Kitzbühel, where he achieved four podium places. “I used to be injured a lot, now I’m in good shape,” he told the Krone . Clarey proved this just last February when he crowned his career with Olympic silver in the downhill. In 2019 he was already named runner-up world champion in the Super-G.

What else is Clarey missing? That's a World Cup victory. Because he has never been allowed to climb to the top. If he were to win again this season, he would be the oldest World Cup winner in history. Didier Cuche currently holds this record at 37 years and seven months. Clarey also wants to compete for medals at his home World Championships in Courchevel/Meribel. “It is a great gift that I have the opportunity to fight for precious metal at home again.” Afterwards, one of the greats will leave the ski stage.
