Giovanni Franzoni is considered a super talent in Italy's ski scene; for some, he is currently the Azzurri's best young hope. Understandable, because anyone who is a three-time junior world champion at the age of 20 has the potential for a great skiing career. Now Franzoni, who comes from Manerba del Garda on the southwest shore of Lake Garda, has set the next milestone: He won the overall and super-G rankings in the European Cup. The final races of the European Cup are taking place in Soldeu this weekend. Because warm weather and poor snow conditions prevail in Andorra, some competitions had to be canceled without replacement - including the Super-G on Friday. Consequently, Franzoni, who was in the lead in this discipline, secured the small ball. In a row with Kilde, Hirscher & Co. But it gets even better: In the overall ranking, only the Swiss Fadri Janutin (709 points) could catch up with the Italian (652 points). But the slalom and giant slalom specialist will not be taking part in the last race of the season - i.e. the downhill run on Sunday. He won the World Cup team event with Switzerland on Friday. Franzoni will therefore win the overall ranking of the European Cup. An outstanding performance. The last Azzurro to achieve this goes by the name of Simon Maurberger: The Ahrntaler grabbed the overall ranking in the 2018/19 season, four years earlier Riccardo Tonetti was also happy about this coup. Franzoni is joining a select circle: before him, skiing greats such as Benjamin Raich, Kjetil Jansrud, Marcel Hirscher, Alexis Pinturault and Aleksander Aamodt Kilde have won the European Cup.
