The basket of a super talent: ski whirlwind in Italy

Lara Colturi has ski racing blood in her. And not a little. The 15-year-old from Piedmont is the daughter of Daniela Ceccarelli, who won Olympic gold in the Super-G in 2002, and Alessandro Colturi, who also spent his life in the ski circus. So it's no surprise that the daughter has a lot of talent. Maybe even more than her mother was once granted.

Because at 15 years old, she is one of the best in the world in her age group. This year, Colturi achieved a victory and a second place at the children's ski world championship “Alpe Cimbra” (Ex-Topolino). Athletes like Mikaela Shiffrin had already made an impact for the first time in such races. She has also been winning on the assembly line at the national level for years.

Actually, there should be great joy in ski Italy, because a talent with superstar potential is emerging. But now there's a lot of fuss about Colturi: The ski jewel has turned down the boot state and will compete for Albania in the future. “Ciao Italy. Colturi will drive for Albania. What bad luck for ski Italy,” writes the Journal of Sport . The shock was deep among those responsible for the association: they knew about the idea, but many were surprised that the Colturi family actually went through with it. Also because the 15-year-old was included in the extended circle of the national team (“osservati”) this year and received a “sweet treat”. A talent with star potential There is calculation behind the change of nation. Colturi has been training under the wing of her parents – who own the elite ski school “Ceccarellli Golden Team” – for years with special programs aimed at making their daughter a star. Under the Albanian flag, the teenager (and the family) will have full freedom. That would be unthinkable in the ranks of FISI. Be it in terms of organizing training and races, or in terms of possible advertising revenue in the future. The 15-year-old is already sponsored by Adidas and has almost 35.000 fans on social media.

Because Colturi has not yet reached the age of 16, she does not need permission from the Italian association to change nations. It remains to be seen how the teenager's path will continue. Because it is already clear: Because of the unusual decision, Colturi's career will be watched more closely than any of her peers. That can also be a burden.
