The next ski bang: Mauro Caviezel throws out

Mauro Caviezel has ended his career with immediate effect. The 34-year-old Swiss announced this on Tuesday. “After my recent injury, I’m feeling good again. “Unfortunately, not good enough to get back into ski racing,” Caviezel is quoted as saying on the Swiss Ski Association’s website.

This marks the end of a great skiing career. Caviezel won the Super-G World Cup in the 2019/20 season and also has twelve podium places in the premier ski class. In December 2020, the speed specialist won his first and only race in Val d'Isére, and he also won the bronze medal in the combination at the 2017 World Championships in St. Moritz.

Two serious head injuries However, Caviezel's career was always associated with serious injuries. In January 2021, he had a serious fall during training and suffered a traumatic brain injury that kept him off the ski slopes for almost two years. The Swiss celebrated his comeback last November, but had another serious fall in the Super-G in Lake Louise and suffered another traumatic brain injury.

An injury that has now cost him his career. “With a clear head and after careful consideration, I unfortunately had to admit to myself with a heavy heart that the time had come for me to retire as an active ski racer.”
