The ski circus mourns the loss of one of its exotic athletes

Very few people are likely to be familiar with the name Eric Keck. Nevertheless, the American was considered one of the biggest exotics in the ski circus - in the literal sense. Now he has died unexpectedly at the age of 52. Keck was active in the late 80s. From a sporting perspective, the American didn't leave a lasting impression; he didn't achieve any top results. But he caused a stir in other ways: the downhill skier weighed an impressive 111 kilograms and was probably one of the heaviest skiers of all time. He rode on a team with the legendary AJ Kitt, who remembers his friend. “Keck has taught me so much along the way and shown me how I can move forward without doubt and with a lot of self-confidence,” said the American, who won bronze in the 1993 World Championships and finished third in Val Gardena in 1992. The brutal fall on the mousetrap Steve Porino, another teammate, said: “Although the record books will never show it, Eric Keck was a celebrity on the US team.” Among other things, he fell over the mousetrap at full speed during a training run in Kitzbühel and then got up as if nothing had happened. “He was a human monster with his powerful body,” Porino said. But the powerhouse's skiing career didn't last long. In his early 20s, Keck closed this chapter and tried out as a football player. He died on Thursday at the age of 52. Nothing is known about the circumstances of his death.
