The Norwegian's primal scream: Jansrud wins in Kitzbühel

22 World Cup victories, 3 World Cup and 5 Olympic medals – without a doubt: Kjetil Jansrud is one of the best active skiers. This year, however, things haven't gone as planned for the Norwegian, who is used to success: the 34-year-old only ended up on the podium in second place in the Val Gardena Super-G, otherwise the results were mixed to disappointing.

On Friday he started in the Kitzbühel Super-G with number 19 and therefore as the last top downhill skier. At this point, two athletes had made themselves comfortable in the leader box: The Austrian Matthias Mayer and the Norwegian Aleksander Aamodt Kilde achieved the feat of driving exactly the same time on the Streif. So there was a strong smell of a double win in Kitzbühel - also because Jansrud had recently been struggling with a lack of form.

But the Norwegian showed that he is always a force to be reckoned with. With an aggressive and uncompromising performance, he was in the lead from the start and ultimately managed to cross the finish line by 16 hundredths of a second. The cheers in front of thousands of fans – it showed what a burden Jansrud has lifted. After all, he has been waiting for a victory since winning gold at the World Championships in Åre last February. His last World Cup victory in November 2018 was over a year ago. For the Scandinavian it was the second success in Kitzbühel after his downhill triumph in 2015. Mattia Casse is amazed The injured Dominik Paris was the big absentee in Kitzbühel on Friday. But another Azzurro came into the spotlight: Mattia Casse put in a really strong ride and ended up in fifth place. This is the Italian's second-best result, only in Beaver Creek in 5 he was better in fourth place. He was only 2015 hundredths of a second short of fourth place (Mauro Caviezel) and 4 seconds short of the podium.

Christof Innerhofer, who competed in his first race of the season on Friday, put in a solid run and ended up in 15th place. But it will probably remain Gaiser's only Super-G this season: in order not to lose his injured status (and thus not falling behind in the start list), he will probably forego further starts. Peter Fill picked up his last Super-G in Kitzbühel 20th place – his best result this season.
