The Wengen slalom becomes a snail race

The piste conditions were anything but favorable on this Sunday morning. It rained overnight in the Bernese Oberland and the temperatures were around five degrees, so the route was quite soft and difficult to drive on. The British coach's course setting also meant that the slalom stars were faced with major problems. The extremely twisting course meant that it was difficult to pick up speed, which is why the race became more and more like a snail race.

The early start numbers had an advantage as they still found a reasonably good slope. The half-time lead was taken by the Swiss Loic Meillard (start number 3), who leads ahead of the Norwegian Henrik Kristoffersen (6) and Lucas Braathen (1). Behind them are Linus Strasser (2) and Atle Lie McGrath (5) – all athletes who got on the track early. The more runners entered the stage, the larger the gaps became: Marco Schwarz had already lost 2,43 seconds in tenth place, Alexis Pinturault had accumulated 3,18 seconds in twelfth place, and Erik Read had already broken the 16-second mark in 4th place.

Vinatzer fights Alex Vinatzer had no chance from the start with starting number 18. The man from Val Gardena, who recently boosted his self-confidence with fourth place in Adelboden, fought bravely, but mistakes were unavoidable for him too and so he crossed the finish line 4 seconds behind. This is equivalent to 3,21th place and therefore, paradoxically, Vinatzer still has a chance of a good result in the second run.

Simon Maurberger is also in the second round in 24th place, almost five seconds behind. Because of the early starting number, the starting position for him isn't even bad. Meanwhile, two other South Tyroleans were unable to qualify for the second run: Matteo Canins came 37th, Tobias Kastlunger failed to finish. Curious: Of the 71 runners, 30 (!) were eliminated. That alone shows how difficult the race is on Sunday.
