The special story behind Ferstl's Kitz victory

When his historic victory in the Super-G on the Streif was official, Josef Ferstl received the traditional chamois as a glass trophy from his father Sepp and struggled with emotions during the national anthem. 40 years after Sepp Ferstl senior's downhill victory, his son “Pepi” became the first German in this discipline to take the top podium place at the famous Hahnenkamm races in Tyrol on Sunday. “Unbelievable, what can I say?” asked the overwhelmed 30-year-old and said of the long wait until the end of the race: “Holy shit, was I excited.”

In 1978 and 1979, Ferstl senior won the downhill in Kitz, and in 2019 the junior made the special story perfect with victory in the Super-G. “When we crossed the local mountain for the first time, it was still such a small stop,” remembers father Sepp. And his son explains: “I walk past dad’s two golden chamois every time at home. And now I have my own – madness.” “I want my own gondola” Josef Ferstl For Ferstl it was the second World Cup victory of his career; in December 2017 he won the Super-G in Val Gardena. “After the victory in Val Gardena, I went home to my family and just thought: Shit, I won a race, I'm the best in the world that day. And that's what happened here today. And that in Kitzbühel,” said Ferstl after the difficult journey in the race that was postponed to Sunday.

After a triumph in Kitzbühel, the name of the winner is always immortalized on a gondola. Regarding the idea of simply writing the name on his father's gondola, Ferstl junior said with a laugh: "I want my own!" Then he said: "I haven't realized it yet, maybe this evening, maybe I won't sleep at all."
