The results after Levi's slalom weekend

The winners:

The Ahrntaler Simon Maurberger With the high start number 51, he scored his first World Cup points in the slalom in 22nd place. The 23-year-old drove a controlled race and secured important points, especially with a view to a better starting number later in the season.

Marcel Hirsche around Henrik kristoffersen : The Austrian and the Norwegian are the measure of all things in the slalom. At the finish, only 0,09 seconds separated the two exceptional athletes. Olympic champion Andre Myhrer was third, 1,41 seconds behind Hirscher.

The reigning junior world champion in slalom, Clement Noel , gave a talent test in Levi. After the first run, the 19-year-old from Val d'Isere was in third place, but in the second run he was eliminated shortly before the finish. The next World Cup slalom will take place on December 9th on his local mountain.

Mikaela Shiffrin: The slalom queen from the USA is not just one class above her competitors, but two classes. What sets Shiffrin apart is her ability to “read” the slopes and “interpret” the course. The series winner in the slalom has a good sense of which sections she has to attack in and in which goal combinations she is the fastest without taking too much risk. This makes the 23-year-old's ride seem like a relaxed training run, while the rest of the world has to risk more than 100% just to keep the gap to Shiffrin manageable, but at the same time is more prone to mistakes.

The losers:

Levi: The ski area is almost 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, and temperatures of -20 degrees Celsius should be normal in mid-November. In 2007, 2011 and 2015 the slalom had to be canceled due to a lack of snow, and in 2018 the use of snow cannons was also not possible due to the mild temperatures. A race was only possible because the organizers had stored last winter's snow in large cold storage facilities over the summer.

None of the women came “Azzurre” into the top 15. The veterans Irene Curtoni and Chiara Costazza finished in 18th and 19th place, almost three seconds behind the winner. The three young “Azzurre” were unable to qualify for the second run or did not reach the finish. There is no imminent end to the slalom misery in sight.

The unlucky one:

The German Felix Neureuther won the slalom in Levi in 2017, after which he tore a cruciate ligament in his knee and missed the entire Olympic season. Two days before his planned comeback, Neureuther broke his thumb in Levi and had to undergo surgery.

Last weekend the slalom athletes were guests in Levi. In Finnish Lapland, Mikaela Shiffrin (USA) and Marcel Hirscher (AUT) were named the winners.
