Ski World Cup 2029: Val Gardena’s candidacy is taking shape

Val Gardena would like to host the title fights in seven years in the host community of Selva for the second time since 1970. The Gardena Organizing Committee has been organizing World Cup races almost continuously since 1969 and is viewed worldwide as an example of best practice. Now the Saslong Classic Club would like to take on the challenge of organizing the Alpine Ski World Championships and took a first, important step in a vote at the national level in September 2021 as the winner against fellow competitor Sestriere. “We are aware of the great responsibility that a World Cup bid entails. Our goal is to organize an international sports festival where the world's best athletes can show off their skills and experience exciting sporting moments under the highest possible safety. We pay great attention to compatibility. We want to leave a positive legacy to future generations - just like the pioneers of 1970 left us,” said Rainer Senoner, President of the Saslong Classic Club, on Tuesday afternoon during the informal meeting with Governor Arno Kompatscher, President of the Italian Winter Sports Association Flavio Roda and the mayors of the municipalities of Val Gardena, Roland Demetz, Christoph Senoner and Tobia Moroder. Two important partners of the candidacy also took part in the meeting: Ambros Hofer (President), Ezio Prinoth and Christoph Vinatzer for Dolomites Val Gardena, and Andreas Schenk (President) for the lift operators Val Gardena/Seiser Alm. Respect for the landscape and population Senoner can understand that there are also critical voices towards major sporting events. “This is understandable based on recent experiences at the Olympic Games in Beijing or the World Cup in Qatar. “We therefore make it our task to act with respect for the unique landscape in the middle of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site and for our population,” Senoner continued. Compatible sporting events are very important to us – compatible with the landscape, compatible with the people who live in Val Gardena and the surrounding communities,” emphasized Kompatscher. Val Gardena already has the necessary sports infrastructure, such as the ski slopes. However, adaptation and renovation measures cannot be ruled out. A unique opportunity for Val Gardena Both Governor Kompatscher and State Councilor Alfreider see a great opportunity in the Alpine World Ski Championships in Val Gardena. An opportunity that the Val Gardena organizing committee wants to tackle with the Italian winter sports association FISI and thus a strong partner at its side. “Our meeting was very successful. Val Gardena's candidacy for the Alpine World Ski Championships in 2029 is going completely according to plan. Val Gardena can be sure of the full support of the Italian winter sports association FISI. This is a strong candidacy that is supported by many institutions and partners. I am convinced that Val Gardena will have a say in the award,” said Flavio Roda, President of the Italian winter sports association FISI. The municipalities of Val Gardena play an essential role The Val Gardena communities of Wolkenstein, St. Christina and St. Ulrich will play a major role in the coming years. “Our job is to be supportive and, above all, to actively involve the population so that it becomes a celebration of sport and community. At the same time, we will help shape this process in the spirit of a sustainable Val Gardena in the future," emphasized the mayors present, Roland Demetz (Wolkenstein), Christoph Senoner (St. Christina) and Tobia Moroder (St. Ulrich), who added: "Not only economic advantages for the The focus should be on different sectors. It mainly contains technical details such as the slopes, but also financing. This dossier must be deposited at the headquarters of the International Ski Federation FIS in spring 2023. In May 2024, the 2029 Alpine World Ski Championships will finally be awarded as part of the FIS Congress. Until then, Rainer Senoner and his team will pull out all the stops with numerous initiatives so that Val Gardena receives the necessary majority in the vote. The World Cup returns to the Saslong in December As far as the Ski World Cup is concerned, it will set up its tents in Val Gardena for the 2022th time in December 55. The Super-G takes place on Friday, December 16th, before the big sporting spectacle traditionally ends with the classic downhill on Saturday, December 17th.
