Shiffrin and Kilde's ski romance: How it all began

A little over a year ago, the two ski superstars Mikaela Shiffrin and Aleksander Aamodt Kilde made it public: “We are a couple.” A ski romance was born that outshone all others. Because Shiffrin is currently the best skier in the world, Kilde is also one of the absolute world-class athletes. But how do two such stars, who have known each other for a long time, suddenly come together? In conversation with ServusTV they revealed this secret.

“We met for the first time eight years ago in Chile,” explains Shiffrin. “After that, we sometimes wrote to each other on Facebook and Instagram. During the 2020 Corona season, Aleks wrote me a message in December in which he also comforted me about my father's death." A message that deeply touched the American. “He was the only person to whom I thought: I want to write back. With all the other news, I felt like this was a burden for me. It felt more natural with him. I felt like answering him because he’s a good guy.” Dates with a mask That was the beginning of the love story. “We met again and again that season,” says Shiffrin, who adds with a smile: “The first thing we did was go for a walk outdoors together – with a mask on, of course. We wanted to stick to the rules and not risk anything.” Slowly, slowly the friendship became more. Things then got strange at the Ski World Championships in Cortina. “There were pictures of me and Aleks lined up next to each other in a shop window,” says Shiffrin, “and the slogan above them happened to be: 'Love has no limits.' I got a lot of messages saying, 'You would be so good together.'"

That made Kilde in particular smile. “We were already dating at that time, but no one knew that. Because of Corona, we wanted to keep it as secret as possible. And then the campaign came along, I just thought it was funny.” The two finally made their love official in June 2021. Kilde: “This year our teams were training in Portillo in Chile at the same time. And one day I started giant slalom training right after her. Then I thought to myself: 'Hu, that was really good, the way she drove.' And… I was really slower after that.” This amuses Shiffrin, who adds for the sake of completeness: “At the end of the day, he still set the best time.”
