The long suffering of Alexander Prast

It wasn't until mid-March that Alexander Prast was able to put his crutches in the corner. Since then he has been working in rehab for 6 to 7 hours a day. Nevertheless, it will still be a while before he can go on a real hike. The damage to the knee after the fall was extensive, but the greatest danger was swelling called compartment syndrome, which can even be life-threatening. Prast was taken to the intensive care unit and had to undergo six operations before he could leave the hospital again.

At the end of February he had another operation. Another arthroscopy was also performed on the meniscus. “It was very difficult at the beginning. I moved the knee with a splint and slowly increased the movement to 90 degrees. Then I went to Innsbruck, where I spent four weeks in a rehabilitation facility,” says Prast. After another 4 weeks at home, he continued his rehabilitation with Paolo Cadamuro and Luis Kuppelwieser at the FC Südtirol RehaFit Center. Since then he has been there every day from Monday to Friday, interrupted only by another three-week stay in Innsbruck. A rigorous rehabilitation program Alexander Prast is currently in the RehaFit center every day from 8.30:12.30 a.m. to 15:18 p.m. Paolo Cadamuro works very intensively to mobilize the knee and shape the muscles. Prast also does a lot of exercises in the water there. In the afternoon, endurance training is on the program at home from XNUMX p.m. to XNUMX p.m., mainly on the ergometer. “Now I’ve started cycling outside. “I’m already doing strength exercises,” says Prast, pleased about another small step forward.

Compartment syndrome also damages nerves, which only recover very slowly. “I still feel the nerve pain in my toes. Things aren't going well with my knee either. But I no longer need painkillers,” says the 24-year-old from Bolzano, describing his current condition. Future as a skier is uncertain The road back to normality is still a long one for Alexander Prast. This becomes most clear when he talks about how he travels on foot. “So far it hasn't been possible to take a walk of more than 40 minutes,” he clarifies and adds jokingly: “I can't get up the Schlern yet.”

Of course, he doesn't yet know whether there is still a future for him as a ski racer. “I’m pretty confident now. The doctors are also very happy with the healing process, but of course they can’t promise anything yet,” says Prast.

After all, he will soon be spending time with his teammates again. He will be at a downhill skiers' training camp in Formia in mid-June and will also try to train a little there.
