The next Goggia party – and Nicol Delago is celebrating

In this still young downhill season, two athletes are in top form: in the men's category Aleksander Aamodt Kilde celebrated the second victory in the second race early Saturday evening in Beaver Creek. And Sofia Goggia did exactly the same for the women. After making the first descent in Lake Louise on Friday in a true had won a hundredth thriller, She followed up 24 hours later and drove to an unchallenged victory in the race, which was shortened due to wind.

For the Italian it is the 19th World Cup triumph of her career. This puts her just one win behind Federica Brignone, who is currently Italy's record holder. In total, Goggia now has 42 podium places in the World Cup - the same number Dominik Paris has to his name.

Nicol Delago's best result in three years But from a South Tyrolean perspective there is also great reason to be happy: Nicol Delago is well on the way back to his old strength. On Friday she had already indicated her early form with a 12th place, and on Saturday the Val Gardena native followed up. At the place where she celebrated one of her three podium finishes, the 26-year-old raced to 7th place.

Delago was fast in the upper part of the route, slowed down a bit in the middle part (also because she didn't catch the ideal line), but gave it her all again in the finish and was happy about this strong exclamation mark. For Delago it was the best placement in almost three years: the last time she was better was at the beginning of January 2020, when she came second in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee. The skier from Wolkenstein was then slowed down by a torn Achilles tendon, which she has now apparently finally put behind her.

Goggia only has to tremble once However, the race was outshone by Sofia Goggia. It is impressive with what greed, with what will, with how much power the Bergamaskin raced over the “Men's Olympic”. With starting number 13, she edged out Corinne Suter, the Swiss woman who had been leading up to that point, by an impressive 37 hundredths of a second.

Afterwards, the reigning vice Olympic champion only had to tremble once, namely when comeback woman Nina Ortlieb took to the track. The Austrian, who was the fastest in two of the three Lake Louise training sessions, was the only one who kept up with Goggia. In the last split she was only seven hundredths of a second behind, but in the final part she lost three tenths of a second - also because Goggia mastered it outstandingly. For Ortlieb, second place is still a great sense of achievement, after all, it was only her second race after an almost two-year break due to injury.

For the other South Tyrolean women, the race on Saturday did not go as planned. Nadia Delago made up a few positions compared to Friday (27th), but with 22nd place there is still room for improvement. Karoline Pichler didn't make it into the points.

The Lake Louise weekend will conclude on Sunday with the Super-G at 19 p.m.
