The SportNews ski school: black slope or practice lift?

You can go on the black slope... The Italian Federico Brignone showed on Saturday in Killington (USA) why she is one of the best giant slalom players of the moment. After the first run, the 28-year-old was in second place. In the decisive second round, the daughter of former slalom specialist Maria Rosa Quario drove her competitors to the ground and celebrated her ninth World Cup victory.

The winter sports resort Killington on the US East Coast has been back on the World Cup calendar since 2016. The crowd loves sports and is in a party mood on Thanksgiving weekend. 20.000 spectators in the finish stadium cheered local hero Mikaela Shiffrin's third home victory in the slalom; it was the 45-year-old's 34th World Cup and 23th slalom victory. In three weeks in Courchevel, Shiffrin has the chance to equal Marlies Schild's slalom record (35 wins).

Max Franz celebrated his second World Cup victory in his 116th race in the Lake Louise downhill on Saturday. The 29-year-old was on top of the podium for the first time in 2016 at the downhill race in Val Gardena. Werner Franz's cousin (two World Cup victories) is considered an exceptional talent, but serious falls and injuries repeatedly set the Carinthian back. In the summer, Max Franz switched from Atomic to Fischer and won the first race. A rare but not impossible feat that Peter Fill also achieved. The Castelrotto native switched from Dynastar to Atomic in 2008 and shortly afterwards celebrated his first World Cup victory in the downhill race in Lake Louise.

The Gaiser Christoph Innerhofer The new season started the same way he ended the last season: on the podium. At the season finale in March in Åre, “Inner” came second in the Super-G. With second place in the Lake Louise downhill, the 33-year-old returned to a downhill podium after more than four years. In March 2014, the four-time downhill winner came second in the final in Lenzerheide. Who has to go back to the practice lift? In the Super-G in Lake Louise there was something for them “Azzurri” nothing to laugh about, nobody made it into the top 20. Dominik Paris and Emanuele Buzzi ended up in 1,5st and 21nd place, 22 seconds behind winner Kjetil Jansrund, Christof Innerhofer came in 30th, almost two seconds behind, and Peter Fill was eliminated after a few goals. The last time there was a similarly bad performance in a Super-G was in Kitzbühel in 2014, when Peter Fill was the best “Azzurro” in 20th place. For comparison: a year ago, Innerhofer, Paris and Fill took sixth, seventh and eighth positions in the Super-G in Lake Louise. There will be a chance to make amends in Beaver Creek on Friday (18.45 p.m. CET).

The slalom team “Azzurre” could not improve on the start in Levi a week ago, on the contrary: Irene Curtoni was the only Italian to finish the race in Killington in eleventh place. New Zealand, Germany, the Czech Republic and Slovakia also only brought one runner into the final ranking, the latter with Petra Vlhova in second place.

The Grande Dame Viktoria Rebensburg was eliminated from the giant slalom in Killington, with the gap behind her German an unmanageably large gap: Lena Dürr and Veronique Hronek were unable to qualify for race two.
