The voices & expectations of the South Tyrolean RTL aces

The Frenchman Mathieu Faivre will open the men's racing winter with start number one. He is followed by his compatriot Thomas Fanara, the reigning giant slalom and overall World Cup winner Marcel Hirscher (Austria), Henrik Kristoffersen (Norway) and Alexis Pinturault and Victor Muffat-Jeandet (both France). With start number seven, last year's winner Ted Ligety completes the group of the absolute top runners.

Roberto Nani (number eight) is the first “Azzurro” to leave the starting house. In addition to him, Florian Eisath (number 13) from Eggental, another Italian, is represented in the starting group of the best 15 giant slalom runners. The veteran is aiming for his first podium finish at the Rettenbachferner. “Sölden is always a special race because nobody knows exactly where they stand. A place on the podium is my big goal,” the 32-year-old South Tyrolean is quoted as saying on the website of the Italian Winter Sports Association.

Riccardo Tonetti comes as the 19th runner. The man from Bolzano knows that as a top 20 runner, a lot is different than last winter and has set himself “somewhat higher goals” this year. Manfred Mölgg (start number 20) did not travel to Sölden completely fit. “I'm not at 100 percent, as may have been the case in the last few years. Anyone who knows me knows that I will still do my best. I may be the most experienced athlete on the team now, but for me every start of the season feels like one of my first races.”

Dominik Paris is excited for the upcoming racing winter Further down the start list, namely with 34 on his chest, Dominik Paris tackles the Sölden giant slalom. The Ultner speed specialist can hardly wait until the season finally starts. “I really want to race, that's why I'm here at the start. My main goal is to qualify for the second round. In any case, during training in Schnalstal I saw that my times can be very fast. “The last word will be on the slopes on Sunday,” says Paris.

Simon Maurberger from Ahrntal is the last driver of the South Tyrolean quintet to leave the starting gate. The 21-year-old definitely wants to top his Sölden result from last year (48th place, editor's note). His motto: “No braking, full throttle!”

When the best giant slalomists in the world fight for the first World Cup points of the new season in Sölden on Sunday from 10 a.m., nine athletes from the Italian ski team will also be right in the middle of it. Over half of the “Azzurri”, namely five runners, come from South Tyrol.
