The South Tyrolean ski balance: who convinced, who disappointed?

The 56th edition of the Alpine Ski World Cup is history. The winter ended rather disappointingly for the South Tyrolean World Cup athletes. Dominik Paris won twice, but otherwise struggled with consistency. Nevertheless, the man from Ultimo managed to achieve something unique: he managed at least one World Cup victory for the 2th season in a row. This incredible consistency of performance is demonstrated by the entire Domme class.

Alex Vinatzer missed his desired first World Cup victory, although he came close several times. The other South Tyroleans, especially Christof Innerhofer, Riccardo Tonetti and Simon Maurberger, were disappointed. It is important for them to draw the right conclusions from this season and then attack again. They showed at least to some extent that they have the potential to keep up with the world's best. Mixed feelings for the Delagos Nadia Delago made her big breakthrough among women. After winning Olympic bronze in the downhill, she is still missing a place in the top 3 in the World Cup, but that will probably come next year.

Her sister Nicol Delago started the season well with 8th place in Lake Louise, but after her serious injury last year (torn Achilles tendon), she had more catching up to do than originally thought. In the shadow of the Delago sisters, Karoline Pichler has blossomed into a continuous points collector. She placed in the top 3 several times in 30 disciplines (downhill, super-G, giant slalom).

Emotionally, Manfred Mölgg's retirement from the night slalom in Flachau was the big highlight. With the almost 40-year-old Enneberger, South Tyrolean ski racing has lost one of its great shining lights. After 20 years and 328 World Cup appearances, Mölgg is going into a well-deserved ski pension. Only Peter Fill has taken part in a World Cup race more often, with 355 starts. It remains exciting to see whether Christof Innerhofer can and will challenge this record.

The situation is different for the women: Federica Brignone (currently 279 starts) will break Manuela Mölgg's record (283) next season. In the “Azzurri” all-time World Cup start list, it is striking how many South Tyrolean athletes appear in the top 25.
