These Austrians are going to the World Ski Championships

The quota was divided equally between 12 women and 12 men; a maximum of 14 per gender were allowed to be nominated. The squad is led by the three defending champions Vincent Kriechmayr, Marco Schwarz and Katharina Liensberger as well as Manuel Feller.

“After consultation with the two racing directors, women and men, we decided to split the quota 12:12. “Not least because we want to be able to fill all women’s disciplines with the full quota,” explained ÖSV Alpine boss Herbert Mandl. “The anticipation is great. We are of course looking forward to the competitions.”

There were no big personnel surprises. As expected, Nicole Schmidhofer, Stephanie Brunner, Michael Matt and Roland Leitinger are not there, at least for the time being. The recently recovered Daniel Danklmaier – unlike Dominik Raschner – also did not make it to France. Max Franz, Christian Hirschbühl, Christian Walder, Katharina Gallhuber and Christine Scheyer are missing due to injuries. Changes are possible until after the men's Chamonix slalom on Saturday.

At the World Championships two years ago in Cortina d'Ampezzo, the ÖSV won eight medals. Kriechmayr (downhill, super-G), Schwarz (combination) and Liensberger (slalom, parallel) secured five gold medals, plus one silver and two bronze.

Mandl sees the men’s team “very well positioned” again this year. We have one or two candidates in each discipline who can definitely compete for medals,” emphasized the Lower Austrian. The initial situation is different for women. “Especially with the women, we are clearly below expectations. Nevertheless, I believe a lot can happen during major events. The speed troop is basically well positioned.”

The biggest problem child at the moment is the two-time world champion Liensberger, who is far from being able to exploit her potential this year. Here Mandl hoped that Liensberger “will catch himself in the next two or three weeks”.

As expected, the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV) is using the full quota and has nominated 24 athletes for the Alpine Ski World Championships starting next Monday in Méribel/Courchevel.
