Dirndl show in Ofterschwang – Shiffrin leads

Veronika Velez-Zuzulova made her World Cup debut at the giant slalom in Sölden on October 28, 2000, and almost 18 years later, on March 10, 2018, she ended her great career. In between there are five World Cup victories and two cruciate ligament tears. After her last knee injury in autumn 2017, the 33-year-old was unable to return to the top of the world.

Michaela Kirchgasser competed in her first World Cup race on December 9th, 2001, won three World Cups and almost 17 years later, the 32-year-old ended her career on March 10th, 2018 in Ofterschwang. Kirchgasser won three gold medals at world championships (all three in the team competition), and, among other things, she was runner-up in the slalom at the 2013 home world championships in Schladming.

Velez-Zuzulova and Kirchgasser swapped their racing suits for dirndls at the slalom in Ofterschwang and were duly welcomed by their fellow competitors at the finish.

In terms of sport, the first slalom round brought no surprises: Mikaela Shiffrin leads ahead of Katharina Gallhuber and Bernadette Schild. The best “Azzurra” is Chiara Costazza in 15th place, Federica Brignone is in intermediate place 21st and Irene Curtoni is eliminated. There was no South Tyrolean at the start.

Two great skiing careers came to an end at the women's World Cup slalom on Saturday in Allgäu. The Slovakian Veronika Velez-Zuzulova and the Austrian Michaela Kirchgasser said goodbye to the ski circus in dirndls.
