Drama about professional skier: “I thought I would lose my foot”

“I somehow went through all the conditions,” says Cédric Noger to Eastern Swiss television TVO . His injured left foot is propped up on the hospital bed, and a potent plaster is stuck over his shin. The Swiss giant slalomist suffered a broken tibia and fibula in Kranjska Gora last weekend. What is bitter is how the injury came about. Noger - 28-time World Cup starter - was unable to qualify for the second run and therefore completed a material test after the first run, during which he fell and sustained the serious injury. “I panicked a bit. My foot felt like it no longer belonged to my body. I thought: The foot is gone, I'm losing my foot! Of course that was totally exaggerated, but at the moment they were logical thoughts for me.” Is the final line now coming? This is the first serious injury for the 29-year-old technology specialist. The timing is extremely unfavorable because material tests usually take place after the season. Noger urgently needed this because this year he experienced an epidemic winter and only finished in the points twice. He is a long way from his best form (thanks to which he even finished 2019th in the World Cup giant slalom in Kranjska Gora in 4). That's why the two-time European Cup winner doesn't know whether he will ever return to the big ski stage again. “If everything goes according to plan, I’ll be back on skis next season. The question is whether to be a racing driver or not,” says Noger, who can also imagine a future as a ski instructor.
